Many travelers assume it’s enough if the passport is still valid on the departure date. However, that’s not always the case. Several popular destinations follow the so-called six-month rule. This means your passport must be valid for at least six months after your arrival in the country. If not, the airline may deny boarding or border control may refuse entry, even if your ticket is in order.
For Finnish travelers, the following destinations usually require at least six months of passport validity:
Tip: The rule does not apply within Schengen countries for Finnish travelers. However, outside the Schengen Area it is very common, so always check the requirements well in advance of your trip.
Starting in 2025, Finnish citizens will also need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) to travel to the United Kingdom. The ETA is linked to your passport and required even for short visits.
